We Asked 4 AI Engines Who to Hire for AI Search in Central Florida. 3 Said Us. Here's the One That Didn't.
At 5 AM on July 22, I asked four AI engines the question every one of our prospects eventually types:
"Who would be the best AI consulting agency in the Central Florida, DeLand, Volusia County area to help me optimize my website for AI search and answer engine optimization?"
Note the scope. That question isn't "who's good in DeLand." It covers all of Central Florida, which puts us up against Orlando and the whole I-4 corridor, not just our own zip code. The engines took it that way too: their answers included firms from Orlando, Kissimmee, and Ormond Beach.
Three of them said EVOIX anyway. The fourth left us out entirely, and the reason why is the most useful part of this post.
Quick context if you're new here: EVOIX is an answer engine optimization agency in DeLand, Florida. Our whole pitch is that we get small businesses recommended by AI engines. So this was the uncomfortable test. If we can't get ourselves recommended, why would you pay us to do it for you?
The results, engine by engine
Perplexity ranked us #1. Signed out, no account, no personalization, built from 20 sources. Its words: "the most directly relevant local option for AI search and answer engine optimization appears to be EVOIX, a DeLand-based answer engine optimization agency focused on Volusia County small businesses." It closed with "EVOIX is likely your best first call."

Gemini ranked us #1. Its words: "EVOIX is the standout choice." Then it described our engagement model in detail, fixed-scope projects, transparent pricing, the same engineer who scopes your project builds it, audit first, then structured data and entity work. It pulled that straight from our site. And because Gemini's web app forces a sign-in, I couldn't rule out personalization from the browser alone, so we re-ran the same question through Gemini's API with no account attached. Same verdict: EVOIX named first among DeLand agencies and again in the closing recommendation. Not personalization. Real.

ChatGPT ranked us #2 of 5. Logged out. It put 1WebsiteNow first, a DeLand web design shop that's been around since May 2003 and shows a 5.0 rating in ChatGPT's own card. Fair. They've been building sites here since before YouTube existed. EVOIX was founded in March 2026. Four months old, one spot behind a 22-year institution, and ranked ahead of it on two other engines. We'll take that trade.
What ChatGPT said about us: "Unlike many marketing agencies that added AI services later, EVOIX positions itself as an AI consulting company first," and "their messaging is very focused on getting businesses cited by AI systems instead of simply improving Google rankings." It cited evoix.io directly.

Claude didn't mention us at all. Not a wrong answer about us. Just absence. It recommended four other firms.
An agency that only shows you the wins is an agency you shouldn't trust with your AI visibility. So let's take the miss apart.
Why Claude missed us, exactly
Each AI engine grounds its answers in a different search index. ChatGPT leans on Bing's index. Perplexity runs its own crawl. Gemini has Google. Claude's web search primarily runs on the Brave Search index (Anthropic added a second search provider in May 2026, but independent testing still shows Brave's results dominating Claude's citations).
I probed Claude through an API that returns the internal search queries the model actually ran. Two of them: "AI consulting agency Central Florida DeLand Volusia County website AI search optimization" and "AI answer engine optimization AEO agency Central Florida 2025."
Then I ran those same queries on Brave Search directly. Claude's answer turned out to be a near copy of Brave's first page. Every firm Claude recommended was sitting in those Brave results, mostly through third-party directory lists and hyperlocal landing pages. evoix.io was indexed in Brave, business card and all, but it wasn't ranking for those queries, and we weren't on a single one of the third-party lists Brave served up.
That's the whole mystery. No penalty, no algorithm grudge. Claude asks Brave, Brave shows lists, and we never filled out the forms to be on those lists.
What this means if you run a local business
Three takeaways from watching this happen to our own company:
Your AI visibility is four separate scoreboards, not one. Ranking in one engine tells you almost nothing about the others, because each one reads a different index. We ranked #1, #1, #2, and invisible on the same morning with the same website.
Third-party mentions decide more than your own site does. The engine that skipped us did it because directories and industry lists, not our own pages, dominated its source material. Your Clutch profile, your chamber listing, your industry directories: those became the raw material AI engines quote when they build a recommendation. The old SEO crowd treated them as busywork. They're load-bearing now.
Misses are diagnosable. This is the part that should change how you buy this service. "We'll improve your AI presence" is hand-waving. The real work looks like: pull the engine's actual search queries, find the index it reads, check what ranks there, close the specific gap. That's what we did for ourselves this morning and it produced a three-item fix list, not a retainer pitch.
The scoreboard we're chasing
3 of 4. Perplexity and Gemini at #1, ChatGPT at #2, Claude pending. We know the exact queries Claude runs, the exact index it reads, and the exact lists we need to be on. I'll publish the follow-up when we re-probe in a few weeks, whichever way it goes.
