The 11 Best Answer Engine Optimization Tools for Small Businesses in 2026, Priced

TL;DR: The best answer engine optimization tools for a small business in 2026 are the free ones first. Microsoft Clarity AI Visibility, Google Search Console, and a free AI visibility checker will tell you whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google AI cite you today, at zero cost. Pay for a tracker like Otterly, HubSpot AEO, or SE Ranking's AI add-on only once you have prompts worth watching weekly. Platforms such as Ahrefs and Semrush start at $129 to $199 a month and are built for teams, and Profound now sells brands a custom enterprise plan behind a free week. Below is every tool we could verify, what it costs as of September 30, 2026, which engines it covers, and the three we run on our own site.

Full disclosure. One of the tools on this list is ours. It is free, it sits at number three, and we say what it does not do. Every price below was read from the vendor's own pricing page on the date above. Prices in this category change monthly, so treat them as a snapshot and check the link before you buy.

If the term is new to you, start with what AI visibility is and how it is measured. This post assumes you already know you want to be cited and now need to see whether you are.

What does an answer engine optimization tool actually do?

An answer engine optimization tool measures whether AI engines mention, cite, or recommend your business when someone asks a question in your category, and tells you which sources the engine leaned on instead. The good ones do four jobs. They track a set of prompts across engines on a schedule. They report your share of the answers against named competitors. They show which URLs got cited, yours and everyone else's. And they flag the technical blockers, such as an AI crawler locked out by your robots file, that keep a page from being read at all.

Most tools do the first three. Few do the fourth. That gap is why a technical checker still belongs in the stack next to a tracker.

How we picked and ranked these tools

We ranked on fit for a business with one to fifty employees, not on feature count. Three filters. Is there a free tier or a plan under $200 a month? Does it track at least ChatGPT plus one of Perplexity or Google AI Overviews? Does it show cited sources, not only a mention count?

Four answer engine optimization tools that are free

1. Microsoft Clarity AI Visibility

Free. Clarity's Citations dashboard, generally available since May 2026, reports how often your pages are cited in Copilot answers and its partner AI experiences, your share of authority against every other domain cited for the same queries, AI referral sessions, and the grounding queries behind each citation. Install the Clarity tag and the report fills in once Microsoft has analyzed the site.

Why it leads the list. It is one of two free tools that show the actual grounding queries an AI engine used to find your page alongside a share-of-citations number. The other is Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, also free, which added its own version, Citation Share, per query, in June 2026. Neither citations report names the competing domains. We lead with Clarity because the citations sit on the same screen as the AI referral sessions and the heatmaps most small businesses already run. On our own site the dashboard shows 2,720 citations over the 30 days to September 27, 2026, and 2,580 of them go to one blog post. That single number told us more about where our authority lives than any paid tracker has. We wrote up our first week of Clarity citation data in July.

Limits. The dashboard labels its data source as Microsoft Copilot and partners. No ChatGPT, no Perplexity, no Gemini.

2. Google Search Console

Free. Not marketed as an AEO tool, but Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the Performance report, and since August 31, 2026 it also breaks their impressions out in a separate Generative AI report, impressions only, no queries. The long, question-shaped queries in the main report are the ones AI Mode is likely composing. On our own property, "aeo agency for professional services firms" sits at position 10 with five impressions and zero clicks in 28 days. Our read, not Google's: that is a page being pulled into an AI answer, not a blue link anyone typed. Filter for long, question-shaped queries and sort by impressions.

Limits. Google only, and the report anonymizes most low-volume queries.

3. EVOIX AI Visibility Checker

Free, ours. Enter a domain and the AI visibility checker asks ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude about the business, reads the site, and returns a 0 to 100 score across four dimensions, AI visibility, technical AEO readiness, entity authority, and competitive position, with a prioritized fix list. First results in about 30 seconds, no email required for the teaser.

What it does not do. It is a point-in-time audit, not a scheduled tracker. It will not watch 50 prompts every morning. Run it before and after a change, and use a tracker in between.

4. Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker

Free, no signup. Enter a brand and it reports how often ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode mention and cite you, drawn from Ahrefs' prompt database. The best free option for a quick cross-engine read on brand mentions.

Limits. It stops at the top five cited domains and top five cited pages, and it will not tell you why a competitor was cited instead of you.

Affordable AI visibility trackers from $29 to $89 a month

5. Otterly.AI

Lite plan $29 a month ($25 billed annually), 15 prompts, tracking ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot, with Claude, AI Mode, and Gemini available as add-ons. Standard is $189 a month for 100 prompts and adds API access. Free trial offered.

Best for. A solo owner who has a list of ten to fifteen buyer questions and wants a weekly read on who gets named. Fifteen prompts is tight, so choose them carefully.

6. HubSpot AEO

$50 a month ($45 billed annually) for tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Reports a brand visibility score, competitor share of voice, cited domains and pages, and sentiment. You can track 25 prompts free, no credit card, before paying. A HubSpot CRM is not required for the standalone tool.

Best for. A small team already on HubSpot, or anyone who wants sentiment alongside mentions at the lowest paid price point on this list.

7. Peec AI

Starter $95 a month for 50 prompts, and you choose three models from its list, with prompt-level tracking and citation analysis. Pro is $245 a month for 150 prompts, Advanced $495 for 350, three models each. The pricing page lists a free trial.

Best for. A business that wants to pick its own three engines rather than take a fixed set. Otterly and HubSpot AEO fix the engines at the entry price; Peec lets you choose, at a higher entry price.

8. SE Ranking AI Search add-on

$89 a month ($71.20 billed annually) on top of an SE Ranking plan, which starts at $129 a month for Core. The add-on tracks AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, and ChatGPT, includes unlimited competitor research across those four, and bundles SE Visible with 200 prompts. The 14-day platform trial includes a limited AI preview of 20 prompts a day.

Best for. A business that already needs a rank tracker for classic SEO and wants AI tracking in the same dashboard. Standalone, the combined $218 a month puts it in the next tier.

Platforms from $129 a month and up

9. Profound

For brands, no published self-serve price. The pricing page shows a free seven-day trial, 50 prompts run daily across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and then an Enterprise plan, custom priced. The Starter and Growth tiers it listed for brands earlier in 2026 are gone. Agencies get a separate self-serve Agency Growth plan with pitch workspaces and client workspaces as a $399 a month add-on each.

Best for. Larger companies, and agencies running audits for prospects. For a small business the free week is the useful part, a deep cross-engine read on 50 prompts before you commit to anything.

10. Semrush

AI visibility is built into the main plans rather than sold separately. Starter is $199 a month ($165.17 billed annually) with 50 prompts tracked daily. Pro+ is $299 a month with 100 prompts. A cheaper $139 SEO plan also lists AI search tracking; we could not confirm its prompt limit from the pricing page. Seven-day free trial.

Best for. Businesses that already pay for Semrush. Buying it only for AI tracking is expensive next to Otterly or HubSpot AEO.

11. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Included in Ahrefs plans from Lite at $129 a month. Brand Radar AI, the deeper research layer across Ahrefs' prompt database, is a separate add-on from $199 a month.

Best for. Existing Ahrefs customers. Same logic as Semrush.

What about the API route?

If you would rather build than subscribe, DataForSEO's AI Optimization API returns live ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity responses with citations, pay per call, no subscription. Live LLM responses cost $0.0006 per call plus the model's own token cost, and the ChatGPT scraper is $0.004 per results page in live mode, with a $50 minimum top-up. Twelve probes across ChatGPT and Perplexity on September 30 cost us 32 cents. This is what we use for client baselines, because it returns the raw answer text and every cited URL. It is not a dashboard. You will be writing scripts.

Which answer engine optimization tools do we actually run?

Three, plus our own. Clarity for Copilot citations and grounding queries, Search Console for the question-shaped queries AI Mode leaves in the Performance report, and the DataForSEO API for scheduled cross-engine probes with the full answer text saved. Our checker runs at the start and end of every engagement. We do not currently pay for a tracker subscription, because the three free sources plus a few dollars of API calls cover a site our size. If we were tracking 100 prompts for five clients, Otterly Standard or HubSpot AEO would be the first paid line item.

The pattern we see in our own numbers is the one to watch for in yours. In the 30 days to September 27, 2026, 95 percent of our Copilot citations landed on one page. A tool that shows you that concentration is worth more than one that reports a single visibility percentage, because concentration is the thing you can act on. Spread the authority or protect the page. Either is a decision. A percentage is not.

Do small businesses need a paid AEO tool at all?

Not at first. Start with the four free tools, pick the ten questions a real buyer would ask before hiring you, and record who gets named this week. If you are absent, the fix is on the site and off the site, not in the dashboard, and the GEO guide's 90-day roadmap covers the order to work in. Buy a tracker when you have shipped changes and need to prove they moved the number. Buy a platform when someone else is paying for it.

What should an answer engine optimization tool measure?

Four things, in this order. Whether you are cited at all for your prompt set. Which URLs, yours and competitors', were cited. Your share of the answers over time. And whether AI crawlers can read your pages. If a tool reports the third without the second, you will know you lost ground without knowing to whom.

If you would rather have someone run the measurement and the fixes, that is what our answer engine optimization services are. Either way, start with the free tier tonight. The numbers are already there.
